GPA calculator — weighted grade point average and "what do I need on the final"

How GPA is calculated

A grade point average weights each course's grade points by its credits:

GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits

Three courses: an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course, a C (2.0) in a 4-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 2-credit course. Points: 4×3 + 2×4 + 3×2 = 26; credits: 9; GPA = 26 ÷ 9 = 2.89. Heavier courses move the average more — an A in a 2-credit elective does not offset a C in a 6-credit core course.

A term GPA is the same calculation restricted to one term; the cumulative GPA covers every course taken.

Grading systems

The tool offers two systems. The A+/A- system is standard in North America and in many international programmes:

Letter Points Score
A+ / A 4.0 95 / 90
A- 3.7 85
B+ 3.3 80
B 3.0 75
B- 2.7 70
C+ 2.3 65
C 2.0 60
C- 1.7 55
D+ 1.3 50
D 1.0 45
F 0.0 0

The AA–FF system (AA 4.0, BA 3.5, BB 3.0, CB 2.5, CC 2.0, DC 1.5, DD 1.0, FD 0.5, FF 0) is used by Turkish universities. Score thresholds vary by institution — many apply relative grading — so treat the numbers above as defaults.

Tracking a running course: what do I need on the final?

Leave a course's letter on "Automatic" and the tool derives it from weighted components. The most common split is midterm 40% + final 60%; templates for two midterms, homework, lab and project are built in. As you enter scores, the tool shows the average so far and the score needed from the remaining components to reach the pass mark.

Example: midterm weight 40%, score 50, pass mark 60. Points earned so far: 50 × 0.40 = 20. To reach 60 you need (60 − 20) ÷ 0.60 = 67 on the final. With a midterm of 30 the requirement rises to 80; with 20, to 87. If the required score exceeds 100 the tool says "impossible"; if it is zero or below, "guaranteed".

Credits or ECTS?

Use the credit type your institution uses for GPA — many European universities weight by ECTS, others by contact hours. The tool works with either; what matters is using the same type for every course.

Where the data lives

Your courses are stored in this browser only and never sent to a server. The Android app keeps the same list on your phone, together with an exam calendar, weekly timetable and course notes.

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?

Each course's grade points (A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3 …) are multiplied by its credits; the products are added and divided by the total credits. Courses without a grade are left out.

What do I need on the final to pass?

Leave the course on "Automatic", enter the midterm score and weight, and the tool shows the score required from the remaining components. With a 40% midterm of 50 and a pass mark of 60, you need 67 on the final.

Which grading systems are supported?

The A+/A- system used in North America and many international programmes, and the AA–FF system used by Turkish universities. Thresholds can differ by institution; check your regulations.

Does the tool use ECTS or local credits?

Whatever you enter. Use the credit type your institution uses for GPA, and use the same type for every course.
