Unit converter — length, area, weight, speed, volume, temperature

How it works

Every category has a base unit (metre, square metre, kilogram, m/s, litre). A value is converted to the base and then to the target: result = value × (source factor ÷ target factor). Temperature is the exception — the scales are offset, not scaled — so it uses the formulas below.

Length

Unit Metres
1 inch 0.0254
1 foot 0.3048
1 yard 0.9144
1 mile 1,609.344
1 km 1,000

1 in = 2.54 cm; 1 ft = 12 in; 1 mi = 1,760 yd. Screens are sold in inches and races run in miles: 5 mi ≈ 8.05 km, 10 km ≈ 6.21 mi.

Area

1 hectare = 10,000 m²; 1 km² = 100 ha. An acre is 4,046.86 m², about 0.405 ha. 1 ft² = 0.0929 m², so a 1,000 ft² apartment is about 93 m². The converter also includes the Turkish dönüm, 1,000 m² — a tenth of a hectare — because land in Türkiye is listed in it.

Weight

1 kg = 2.2046 lb; 1 lb = 453.59 g = 16 oz; 1 oz = 28.35 g. The tonne here is the metric tonne, 1,000 kg (a US short ton is 907 kg).

Speed

1 mph = 1.609 km/h; 100 km/h ≈ 62 mph, 70 mph ≈ 113 km/h. A knot (nautical mile per hour) is 1.852 km/h; 20 knots ≈ 37 km/h. 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h.

Volume

1 litre = 1,000 ml; 1 m³ = 1,000 litres. The gallon in the converter is the US gallon, 3.785 litres. The imperial gallon is 4.546 litres; UK mpg figures use it, so a UK "40 mpg" is a US 33 mpg.

Temperature

Anchors: 0 °C = 32 °F, 37 °C ≈ 98.6 °F (body), 100 °C = 212 °F, and −40 is the same on both scales. Oven settings: 180 °C ≈ 350 °F, 200 °C ≈ 400 °F.

Frequently asked questions

How many centimetres in an inch?

Exactly 2.54 cm. A foot is 30.48 cm, a yard 91.44 cm, a mile 1,609.344 m.

How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?

°C = (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9. 100 °F is about 37.8 °C, 32 °F is exactly 0 °C. Kelvin is °C + 273.15.

Is the gallon US or imperial?

US: 3.785 litres. The imperial gallon is 4.546 litres — UK fuel economy figures use it.

What is a dönüm?

The Turkish land unit, 1,000 m² — a tenth of a hectare, about a quarter of an acre.
